Manitowoc MLC650 crawler crane with VPC-MAX™ was essential to construction upgrades to the Leach Highway and Welshpool Road Interchange in Western Australia. Prior to the updates, the route was the second most dangerous and congested intersection in the state. The crane was deployed by heavy lift contractor and crane provider Tutt Bryant Heavy Lift & Shift, which used it to install 16 bridge beams from only two positions.
In late 2022, Tutt Bryant Heavy Lift & Shift (TBHLS), a renowned heavy lift contractor and crane provider installed 16 bridge beams on the Leach Highway and Welshpool Road Interchange in Australia. Given the scale of the task, the company selected its Manitowoc MLC650 crawler crane to handle the work, complete with its unique Variable Position Counterweight, the VPC-MAX™.
The strength of the crane meant Tutt Bryant could complete all the work from just two positions on the jobsite, picking and carrying the 16 beams to install them in the final position. This method not only saved the crane from having to relocate to more positions, which would necessitate more ground preparation work, but also meant the work was completed faster.
The Manitowoc MLC650 is a 650 t capacity crane, and with Manitowoc’s VPC-MAX™, capacity increases by 50 t to 700 t. The crane is designed for easy transport and short setup times while also boasting the strongest load charts in its class.
The 16 bridge beams on the Leach Highway and Welshpool Road Interchange were successfully transported and installed by the Tutt Bryant team in one weekend. The assembly was completed three days ahead of schedule, boosting the alliance’s confidence in the Tutt Bryant team.
Before the upgrade, the Leach Highway and Welshpool Road Interchange was Western Australia’s second most dangerous and congested intersection, with more than 200 crashes between 2015 and 2019. Construction work for the A $93 million (US$63 million) project was handled by a local joint venture, the Leach Welshpool Alliance (LWA), formed by engineering companies BG&E, Georgiou Group, and Golder Associates.
